A new year, fresh start you would say, as I am redoing my third year of animation. Due to personal problems I decided to skip out for a year.

So from today I will try to make daily uploads in the process of the music video. As I joined a group who already somewhat decided the the Artist and Song and asked for permission so I can not update anything on that yet.

Assignment

The assignment basicly speaks for its self. Make contact with an artist, establish a contract and develop and produce an animation videoclip for the music/artist. There are a little to few requierments, or limited standards to the assignment.

  • It has to be about 3 minutes long.
  • Make a set up of whom the audience will be and adjust the animation to it.
  • In development and production there will be roles and tasks devided in the group.
  • The process and reflection will be posted on the School’s site.

Schedule.

Week 37: Establishments of the group, conact with the artist as well as the contract and a general concept of the animation.

Week 38: Make a schedule and establish roles within the group. There will be 3 elaborate concepts with moodboards that will be discussed with the tutors. Start on the script and storyboard.

Week 39: Finished concept, finnished schedule, finished storyboard.

Week 40: Graphical Timeline of the song. Visuals of the concept

Week 41: Start Productoin

Points of attention

All in all we have 7 weeks to procude this animation (development included) which makes time short. There are keyfactors that play into completing this animation in time AND completly in high quality.

Planning is one of the most obvious key components yet making a schedule is one thing, to actually follow it is another. Someone in the team as to make sure everyone gets their shit done in time. Logicly the Director is responsible for this.

Efficieny is another part. This is something that can be be done in two ways. One way could be called ‘cheating’ by e.g. repeating certain scenes or shots within the three minutes. A tricky thing is to not do this to often so that it’s noticeable. Another is the technique that could influence the time requierd to make it. If we want to make something in 3D we’ll have to model it first, key it, then inbetween, render and then in post edit maybe make some adjustments as in fitting it into the environment scenario. This does make it impossible but a thing to concider. Another way is the use of Live action footage, which in a music video should be conciderd highly, as the artist and it’s music is the sort of the center of the whole project.

Song length is the most obvious one. Even though you want a song really badly that is longer than the 3 minutes statet by the guidelines, ask the artist if they can shorten it a bit.

Communication is one of the basics in this assignment. Not only from the group towards the artist but also between oneanother. First we need to communicate between the groupmembers of what we wish to achieve to be able to communicate this between ourselves and the artist. Not that you make something that works negativly on the artist, because it’s not what he wants (it’s his/her name on the line). What this also means is that if you can not get something done in time, or something else comes up, to tells this to the other members, so hey can step in, or changes can be made. At least that you are not missing large parts in your animation.
